Summer is a fantastic time of year, the perfect time in fact for spending time outdoors with your friends and family. It is also a great time for your garden, as you should have flowers blooming, fruit ripening and lots of bees flying about collecting pollen. Here are our simple tips to make sure your garden thrives throughout the summer:
#1 Apply a layer of mulch
One of the easiest ways to look after your garden in summer is to apply a layer of mulch in order to keep the soil cool and moist. There are various different types of mulch, from pine bark chips to pebbles and whichever type you chose is down to personal taste. They will all help to not only keep the soil cool, but control weeds as well. Make sure your mulch is laid to a depth of about 5 to 10 cm and keep checking it throughout the summer to make sure this depth is maintained.
#2 Have a summer clean
When you start to prepare your garden for summer, make sure you remove any dead flower heads as if you leave these on your plant will start to seed. This seeding process uses a lot of the plants energy and so can be quite stressful for it. You should also keep an eye out for pests and diseases as the earlier you catch and treat these the better. If you have some unwanted visitors in your garden, such as Japanese Knotweed and other such pests, then you will need the help of specialist japanese knotweed removal new mills.
#3 Keep it watered
Your plants will need a good drink during the summer months, just like the rest of us, especially if this heatwave continues. The best times of the day are the cooler hours early in the morning and late evening as this will allow the plants to suck in the moisture without the heat of the sun evaporating it. Take the time to do regular deep watering during the summer months and your plants will be your friends for life! Keep an eye out for those hosepipe bans though, you don’t want to get a fine!
